After years away from a full-length release of new material, legendary Irish rock band U2 returns with “Silencio,” a propulsive new single released on September 24, 2026. The track serves as the lead single from the band’s upcoming 16th studio album, Carnaval de Luz, due on November 13, 2026.
Produced by longtime collaborator Jacknife Lee, with additional production from Ryan Tedder, “Silencio” takes U2 in a rawer direction. The Edge trades his familiar shimmering guitar effects for a more direct, aggressive riff, while Larry Mullen Jr.’s driving drums help give the track its urgent, almost neo-punk character.
Bono brings a darker lyrical perspective, touching on modern anxiety and spiritual imagery over the song’s relentless groove. The result is a tense, guitar-led track that captures a different side of U2 while retaining the band’s recognizable sense of scale.
The release arrives just ahead of a major milestone for the group. On September 25, 2026, U2 marks 50 years since its first rehearsal together, making the timing of “Silencio” particularly significant.
The song also introduces the next chapter of Carnaval de Luz, U2’s first studio album of new material in nine years. The 12-track project is set to feature collaborations with Brian Eno and Rosalía, alongside “Torn,” a closing duet featuring the final vocal recordings of the late Dolly Parton.
